Abstract In this work, the roll stabilization problem of ships using a novel air-filled canting keel mechanism, dubbed the Airkeel, is studied when subjected to wave-induced disturbances. The problem is investigated in simulation using a modified 1-DoF model of a typical monohull marine vessel equipped with the airkeel, and a simple master-slave controller. The simulation results are further verified by performing experimental investigations on a model boat equipped with a 3D printed airkeel in an indoor water tank with an in-house wave-maker assembly and in a water body at a nearby harbour as a field test. The data from the simulation and experiments suggest that the mechanism (with its controller) can substantially reduce the effect of waves.
