Abstract | Flywheel is a promising energy storage system for renewable energy integration to main grid, electric vehicle charging stations, and domestic applications. Indeed, recent developments in flywheels technology offer the possibility to consider it as a competitive option for electric energy storage. In this paper, a flywheel-based domestic energy storage application is proposed for power peak shaving and power backup, which can be of great interest for domestic fast charging station (FCS) for electric vehicle in the near future. The overall PMSM-based flywheel configuration is reviewed and controlling strategy is experimentally implemented. A lab-scale prototype has been built to validate the proposal and a case study has been presented and discussed to demonstrate the possibilities offered by such energy storage system for congestion prevention in distribution grid. |
