Polarization dynamics in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers subject to optical injection or current modulation

In the first part of this paper, orthogonal optical injection, i.e. the injected field has a linear polarization (LP) orthogonal to that of the free-running VCSEL is investigated. The experiments are carried out on oxide-confined AlGaAs-GaAs quantum well VCSEL for a large frequency detuning range: f...

Summary:In the first part of this paper, orthogonal optical injection, i.e. the injected field has a linear polarization (LP) orthogonal to that of the free-running VCSEL is investigated. The experiments are carried out on oxide-confined AlGaAs-GaAs quantum well VCSEL for a large frequency detuning range: from -82 to 180 GHz. In the second part, nonlinear dynamics of the polarization of single- and multi-transverse mode VCSEL under current modulation experimentally and theoretically investigated. Single-mode VCSEL demonstrates irregular pulses of the power of individual polarizations with a period equal to twice the modulation period.
