Summary:The purpose of this project was to develop a mental health community outreach and education program for Eritrean immigrants, to identify a potential funding source, and to write a grant to fund the program. The goal of the program is to improve the mental health of Eritrean immigrant adults at risk or suffering from mental illness through educational workshops conducted by native speaking mental health professionals and outreach workers providing linguistic and culturally appropriate literature on mental illness, resources, and referrals. Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center, located in Los Angeles, California, was the agency selected as the focus of this project. After extensive literature review examining barriers, utilization patterns, and most effective interventions for immigrants at risk of suffering from mental illness, the grant writer designed a community based mental health outreach and education program. The California Endowment was identified as a potential funding source as its mission is congruent with objectives of the proposed program.
