Abstract Fossil carbon and coal in particular is sedimentary rock of vegetal origin. Coal contains 65-67% of carbon, 26% of hydrogen, 1.5-15% of oxygen, some sulfur and nitrogen. Coal is used as fuel after enhancement by coking or gasification. The paper discusses contemporary use of coal as a chemical substance and energy carrier. Keywords: carbon, coke, gas generation, gas generator, hydrogen addition, reactor, pyrolysis. Reiksminiai zodziai: akmens anglies dujinimas, hidrinimas, koksavimas, pirolize, reaktorius, regeneratorius.
