Abstract Organizations need a way to convert their data into actionable information, and one technique for accomplishing this is multidimensional modeling (MDM). MDM is a way to conceptualize business models as a set of measures described by ordinary aspects of business; it is particularly useful for sifting, summarizing, and arranging data for analysis. OLTP systems are based on entities, relationships, functional decomposition, and state transition analysis, but MDM for data warehousing is based on facts, dimensions, hierarchies, and sparsity. A fully normalized OLTP design for an order-entry system could have hundreds of tables, but MDMs are much simpler; a good MDM can be implemented in a relational database, a multidimensional database, or an object-oriented database. Aspects to consider when building an MDM are examined, and how MDMs differ from relational models is described.

Multidimensional modeling (MDM) is one approach to making sense of, or warehousing, an organization's data. MDM is a technique for conceptualizing business models as a set of measures described by ordinary facets of business. It is designed around numeric data. Part of the allure of MDMs is their simplicity. MDM is designed to support the reporting and analytical needs of knowledge workers. The first step to building a multidimensional model is to pick a business subject area and model it by asking 6 fundamental questions that include: 1. What business process is being modeled? 2. What are the measures? 3. What do the measures have in common? Facts and dimensions are represented physically in a relational database as tables. The key point to keep in mind is that dimensional modeling for relational databases is designed to create long, thin fact tables and relatively small, short, and wide dimension tables. Since dimensional modeling always involves hierarchies in dimensions, aggregation of information is key element in the usefulness of the model.
