Refugees need to be and should be protected throughout every part of the asylum process. They should not be expected to remain in a country where their human rights are violated nor be expected to embark on an unsafe, unpredictable journey in the hope of reaching safety and/or asylum.

| AbstractList | Refugees need to be and should be protected throughout every part of the asylum process. They should not be expected to remain in a country where their human rights are violated nor be expected to embark on an unsafe, unpredictable journey in the hope of reaching safety and/or asylum. Western governments are attempting to construct a one dimensional paradigm that conflates the trafficking and smuggling of refugees and treats all such activity as purely criminal. However, the people who actually engage the services of smugglers have very different, far more complex stories to tell. Common to all the refugees interviewed was that they were all in fear for their lives, felt forced to flee persecution and had no other alternative than to turn to an illegal syndicate or a smuggling organisation. |
