| AbstractList | Real GDP increased 3.9% in the fourth quarter of 1997, according to the preliminary estimates of the national income and product accounts; the advance estimate of real GDP, reported in the February Business Situation, had shown a 4.3% increase. The downward revision was more than accounted for by a large downward revision to net exports; government spending and consumer spending were also revised down, but by much less. These downward relations were partly offset by a large upward revision to business inventory investment. Business fixed investment was revised very little. The picture of the economy presented by the preliminary estimates is somewhat changed from that presented by the advance estimates.
