Summary:Today's rapid changes on the goods market require an increased flexibility of the production systems. However, increasing the flexibility usually also increases the complexity of the system, and therefore the costs per part produced. The challenge is to develop control strategies capable to increase the flexibility and productivity of a production system, while at the same time reducing the associated costs. We propose a control strategy capable to respond to this challenge. Using multitasking programming and optimal routing, we implement a controller capable to increase the system's productivity by more than 25% without reducing the flexibility of the manufacturing system. The strategy proposed reduces the manufacturing cost per part since the productivity increases. Key words: productivity, multitasking, flexibility, optimal routing
