Summary:In recent years sustainability management has become a major challenge for companies. This is not only a issue of medium- and long-term survival, but environmental and social aspects have to be integrated into corporate action. This is particularly true as they are part of global supply chains, where only a minor part of the overall value creation takes part within the enterprises themselves. Against this background, companies integrate environmental and social standards into their supply management thereby fulfilling demands towards the three pillars of sustainability. The paper presents by the example of the Volkswagen AG, Wolfsburg, Germany, how overarching requirements of sustainable development are operationalised. This allowed integrating respective guidelines into supply policies and processes at Volkswagen. Both the process as well as central outcome of the project are outlined within the paper, where also the consequences for medium-sized companies are discussed. [PUB ABSTRACT]
