Abstract The biotransformation of ferulic acid to vanillin was carried out using locally isolated bacterial cultures from manure, paddy straw and garbage samples which include Pseudomonas sp. Pseudomonas sp. was enriched with the ferulic acid thrice and subsequently named as EF sub(1), EF sub(2) and EF sub(3). EF sub(3) produced maximum vanillin (850 mu g/100 mg culture), followed by EF sub(2) (842 mu g/100 mg culture), manure isolate MAMWR (B) (598 mu g/100 mg culture), EF sub(1) (474 mu g/100 mg culture) and Pseudomonas sp. (230 mu g/100 mg culture). Garbage isolate GRMVVSR (B) produced very insignificant amount (1.13 mu g/100 mg culture) of vanillin.
