Summary:Two methods for storing diapausing southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar, larvae during winter and spring were evaluated. An experiment was conducted in 1985-86 to compare storage of diapausing larvae in polyethylene carboys buried underground with storage in an environmental chamber held at 10 degrees C (standard procedure) for 4 and 6 months. Survival of larvae upon removal from storage after 4 and 6 months was 98.4 and 97.6%, respectively, for those in the environmental chamber compared with 99.2 and 96.0% for those stored underground. The mean yield of normal adults from larvae that survived storage was 90% for all storage site and period treatments
