Abstract Mobile WiMAX is an emerging technology that can provide ubiquitous Internet access. To provide seamless service in mobile WiMAX environment, delay or disruption in dealing with mobility must be minimized. However offering seamless services on IEEE 802.16e networks is very hard due to long handover latency both in layer 2 and 3. In this paper, we propose a fast cross-layer handover scheme based on prediction algorithm. With the help of the prediction, layer-3 handover activities are able to occur prior to layer-2 handover, and therefore, total handover latency can be reduced. The experiments conducted with system parameters and propagation model defined by WiMAX Forum demonstrate that the proposed method predicts the future signal level accurately and reduces the total handover latency. 본 논문에서는 모바일 와이맥스환경에서 이동성 예측 알고리즘을 이용한 계층 통합적 핸드오버 기법을 제안한다. 예측 알고리즘은 선형 회귀 (Linear Regression) 분석을 사용하며 분석 데이터 수집을 위해 이동 단말의 신호의 세기를 주기적으로 샘플링한다. 예측을 이용하므로 L3 핸드오버 절차를 L2 핸드오버가 시작되기 전에 시작할 수 있으며 따라서 핸드오버 지연시간을 단축할 수 있다. 실험은 WiMAX Forum에서 정의한 경로 손실 모델 (path loss model) 및 시스템 파라미터를 이용하였다. 실험을 통하여 신호의 세기 예측이 정확하게 이뤄질 수 있으며 핸드오버 지연이 줄어드는 것을 확인하였다.
