Abstract The solution of global environmental problems caused by global trends in human development has predetermined the adoption and dissemination in the international community of the Concept of Sustainable Development as a process of identifying, studying and using the interrelationships existing between the economy, society and the environment. The oil and gas complex, being the main source of energy in the world, has a significant impact on the economic and social development of national systems and at the same time has a negative impact on the environment. As a result of the study of public corporate reporting, a conclusion has been formulated about the widespread implementation of ESG principles in the field of ecology in the leading oil and gas companies of the Russian Federation; an imbalance of indicators used to assess oil and gas waste management at the federal and corporate levels has been established. The high importance of the negative impact of oil sludge on the environment has been studied. The need for a fundamental change in attitudes towards the practices of using oil sludge is emphasized. The problems of implementing the sustainable development goals of oil and gas companies in the field of waste management have been identified: an annual increase in the volume of oil sludge, a significant number of oil sludge placed in storage and burial, the use of inefficient disposal practices, the lack of a unified methodology for assessing the effectiveness of waste management, including oil sludge. The article substantiates the need to unify the list of indicators for waste management in order to make optimal management decisions to minimize the negative impact on the environment. It is recommended that a regulated hierarchical waste management procedure be introduced into the practice of oil and gas companies. The content of the stages of the hierarchical waste management procedure has been clarified, reflecting modern practices in the use of oil sludge.
