Bibliography:The diurnal time budget and activity rhythm of 4 captive Asian elephants( Elephas maximus) (3 ♀ ; 1♂ )in Kuming zoo were observed and analyzed by the method of instantaneous scanning, all occurrence sampling and focal animal sampling from 13 January to 8 May 2012. Among the behaviors of feeding, movement, standing, resting, communication, emotion and others, feeding and movement were most frequently recorded. Time allocated to movement was higher than that for feeding and other behaviors accounted for less than 10%. Time allocated to movement( 14% )was lower than that for feeding (67%)for pregnant elephants. Male elephants showed roughly similar movement and feeding behavior patterns on weekdays and holidays. Females showed more movement on weekdays than holidays and this contrasted with feeding behaviors. Two obvious feeding peaks were recorded at 10: 00 -11 : 00 and 14:00 -15:00 for females, and 11 : 00 -12: 00 and 14: 00 -15: 00 for males. There was one evident movement peak at 13:00 -14:00 and one obvious
