Abstract Mathematical Modeling is a teaching trend that makes it possible for students to be involved in the classroom and to learn using materials from the environment in which they live. For this purpose, work was carried out involving caupi beans of the always-green variety and pet bottles. The objective of the proposal was to perceive Mathematical Modeling as a teaching methodology that provides knowledge building and collaborative learning involving students' daily situations. Faced with this proposition, Mathematical Modeling activities were developed with 2nd year high school students from a public school in the state of Maranhão. In this scenario, a qualitative research was carried out and, for the recording of the data, the researchers relied on field diaries, photographs and annotations carried out by the investigated subjects. In this context, it was observed that the collaborative groups worked autonomously and produced knowledge that could be put into practice in the day-to-day life of the participants. Students built mathematical ideas applicable to their daily lives using concrete materials.
