AbstractList Salmonella typhimurium decline rapidly when inoculated into Tilapia aurea culture pools fertilized with fresh swine waste. Within the water column, a 95% decline of viable cells occurred during the first 6 h. Isolation of viable Salmonellae was possible at 16 days post-inoculation, but not at 32 days. Similarly, Salmonellae could be detected in the viscera and epithelium of T. aurea at 16 days, although not at 32 days. Salmonellae were not isolated from the fish flesh, nor was there evidence of septicemic infection.

Salmonella typhimurium declined rapidly when inoculated into Tilapia aurea culture pools fertilized with fresh swine waste.
Studies were carried out on the variability of Salmonella typhimurium in water and in fish when fresh pig manure was used to fertilize stagnant ponds stocked with Tilapia aurea. The numbers of viable cells in the water decreased by 95 per cent within 6 hours. Viable cells could be isolated from the water, and from the viscera and epithelium of the fish, after 16 days, but not after 32 days. No salmonellae were isolated from the fish flesh, and there was no evidence of septicaemic infection.
