Abstract | The effects of applying an order-analytical, multidimensional scaling method for determining hierarchies among a list of Chinese and Japanese kanji characters and mnemonics were explored. The authors used those hierarchies to design a computer-assisted, instructional program for learning the characters. The participants were presented a series of kanji characters in a hierarchical or random order, with and without mnemonics. Recall and recognition tests were administered immediately after the presentation and 48 hr later. Characters that were arranged in a hierarchical sequence or those presented with mnemonics were better learned and remembered than those that were presented in a random order or without mnemonics. The interaction of sequence and mnemonics, however, did not yield significant effects for learning. The results suggest that techniques such as order analysis that scale and organize variables according to their variance contribution and dominance can be useful for designing effective instruction. |

The results suggest that techniques such as order analysis that scale and organize variables according to their variance contribution and dominance can be useful for designing effective instruction. Studied the effects of applying an order-analytical, multidimensional scaling method for determining hierarchies among Chinese and Japanese "kanji" characters to be learned. Results for 60 undergraduates who used a computer-assisted instructional program based on the method indicate its usefulness in designing effective instruction. (SLD) The effects of applying an order-analytical, multidimensional scaling method for determining hierarchies among a list of Chinese & Japanese Kanji characters & mnemonics were explored. The authors used those hierarchies to design a computer-assisted instructional program for learning the characters. The interaction of sequence & mnemonics, however, did not yield significant effects for learning. The results suggest that techniques such as order analysis that scale & organize variables according to their variance contribution & dominance can be useful for designing effective instruction. 3 Tables, 5 Figures, 30 References. Adapted from the source document The important features of mnemonics are (a) that they require the learner to rehearse the targeted material in order to integrate it into an existing memory representation and (b) that they provide an effective means of retrieving that information (Levin, 1993; McDaniel & Einstein, 1986; Wang & Thomas, 1995). Because mnemonics are imaginal (e.g., method of loci and peg-word mnemonics), they are particularly helpful for learning novel information such as a foreign language. [...]researchers have suggested that order analysis can provide a prescriptive and diagnostic tool for instructional designers and evaluators that can be applied in lieu of traditional scaling techniques (e.g., D. J. Krus, Wiedman, & Bland, 1975). Because order analysis has been shown to reliably determine the variance relations (i.e., dominance) among items that comprise multidimensional tasks such as decision making and logical reasoning (e.g., D. J. Krus, 1977; D. J. Krus et al., 1975; P. H. Krus & Blackman, 1980), we believed that the same approach could be applied to designing effective instructional sequences in learning novel material such as Japanese or Chinese kanji characters. Learners appear to encode pictorial-like materials as intact units. [...]not only could learners acquire more information from the iconic representation of the characters themselves (the functional value of a memory byte is increased) but also the imaginal embodiment of the verbal information represented by the characters works as a supplementary, second-level cue to access targeted information in long-term memory (e.g., the English meaning) that cannot be accessed via the verbal code (Paivio, 1990). |
