Its populations are distributed in different altitudes, regions, and keep stable population density. This is the reason the species has been tested as a bioindicator for environmental quality in alpine ecosystems. The cumulative environmental impact in snow vole populations was evaluated using cytogenetical, hematological, ecotoxicological, radiometrical, ecophysiological, and morphophysiological indices. Standard karyotype, chromosomal aberrations, and other diversions have been observed. These investigations reveal that the snow vole is one of the most appropriate species that can be used as a biomonitor for environmental assessment in mountain areas.
The bioindicator capacity of the snow vole was characterized. Standard clinical methods were applied to determine hemoglobin contents, haematocrit and morphological characterization of erythrocytes. The chromosome aberrations were recorded according to the standard recommendations. The alpine snow vole population was usually stable, with little variability in survival and reproduction rates throughout the years, particularly during the winter. The snow vole's relative abundance for three summer seasons in Rila Mountain was about 12 animals per 100 trap nights. Food spectrum analysis showed that 12% of the investigated stomach contents consisted of insect remains, which represented about 6% of the total diet composition. The rest 94% comprised of green vegetable remains, dominant for the diet of all the investigated animals.
