Summary: | The surface conditions of the high alloy stainless steel Avesta 254 SMO® were investigated after immersion in a 6 wt% FeCl
3 solution at different temperatures and for different lengths of time. Techniques used were Auger Electron Spectroscopy and Angular Resolved X-ray Photo-electron Spectroscopy. At present, there are at least two methods of establishing the critical pitting temperature (CPT) in a ferric chloride solution; the temperature is raised after inspection for pits and the test is renewed with either (I) the same sample as was used before, or (2) a new sample. The higher CPT measured by the first method is caused by the formation of a more stable passive layer during the previous exposure. |
