Summary:Diligent posttreatment wound care management undoubtedly will improve wound outcome and patient satisfaction. There are limited recommendations in the literature to guide management plans. Nevertheless patients must receive specific instructions to complete wound care. These instructions should include whether a dressing is indicated, which dressing should be used, the duration of use, and the method of application. The plan must explain clearly the reasons for returning for further medical attention, for follow-up, for routine removal of sutures/staples, and an earlier return for possible concerns of infection or dehiscence. Preprinted discharge instruction sheets are useful, and illustrations can be helpful.
