The study was centered in Hong Kong, and comprised housewives in one group, primarily for assessing exposures in the home, and office workers in a second group to assess the contribution of the workplace to overall exposure. Saliva cotinine analyses were also undertaken to confirm the nonsmoking status of the subjects and to investigate their correlation with ETS exposure measurements. AbstractList | Personal monitors were used to assess the exposure of housewives and office workers in Hong Kong to environmental tobacco smoke and respirable suspended particles. During the study, information on weather conditions and the levels of specific airborne pollutants was collected. The median 24-h time-weighted average respirable suspended particle concentrations ranged 4354 mu g/m super(3), which suggested that tobacco smoke did not contribute significantly to respirable suspended particle levels in indoor environments in Hong Kong. The highest median level for environmental tobacco smoke particles was found in subjects both living and working in smoking environments, and the concentration represented approximately 5% of the measured respirable suspended particles. All groups of workers investigated were exposed to significantly higher concentrations of environmental tobacco smoke particles and nicotine than housewives.
