Abstract Although acceptance of specific and challenging goals is central to goal setting theory, little research that examines the process of acceptance has been conducted. The present studies utilized a social-cognitive theory of processing to explore the nature of individual goal acceptance/rejection decisions. The results of two laboratory studies suggest that: (1) goal acceptance/rejection decision processing time is a curvilinear function of goal difficulty, and (2) acceptance/rejection decision processing time influences task strategy development and, thereby, task performance. Implications of a two-stage processing model of goal acceptance are discussed.
AbstractList The fundamental premise of goal setting is that specific and challenging goals, if accepted, lead to higher levels of performance. Two studies utilizing a social-cognitive theory of processing were conducted to examine goal acceptance-rejection decisions within the framework of a 2-step feature comparison model. Both studies involved a computerized task in which 42 and 151 subjects, respectively, searched for words in "hidden word" puzzles. The results are supportive of a curvilinear relation among goal difficulty, goal acceptance-rejection decision processing time, and performance. A person quickly accepts or rejects goals that are too easy or impossible but spends more time considering equivocal goals before making an acceptance-rejection decision. The acceptance-rejection decision processing time influences task strategy development and, thereby, task performance. Thus, moderately difficult goals have a positive effect on performance because their equivocal nature leads individuals to contemplate strategies to their achievement.
