The Greenpeace "Rainbow Warrior" incident is only one example of how the French keep a tight rein on information about the tests and how they may be devastating ocean life and the health of the islanders. An examination of the history of French nuclear testing in the Polynesian Islands reveals that General Charles de Gaulle initiated testing in July 1966 on the atoll of Moruroa & continued with the detonation of 44 bombs during the next 8 years. While the French managed to contain Polynesian protests, it is argued that opposition from New Zealand & Australia were responsible for moving French nuclear testing underground. Few health studies have been conducted concerning the massive radioactive fallout, however. It is suggested that the French effort to continue testing has prevented Polynesians from attaining political independence. 2 Figures, 4 Photographs. L. Baker Since 1966, France has conducted 159 atmospheric and underground nuclear tests on two Polynesian islands. While local protests were quietly ignored, international outcry and boycotts in 1973 elevated the visibility of the nuclear tests. France, however, refused to move testing sites, and investigative commissions in the 1980's reflected strong governmental biases. The ongoing testing has affected not only the health of the atolls, but also the health of Polynesians and the political and economic stability of the region. After 159 nuclear tests by the French, radioactive poisoning of the islands and islanders of French Polynesia has occurred.
