Abstract In this paper the author attempts to raise some questions about the theoretical assumptions of critical discourse analysis by exploring aspects of the category 'ideology'. 'Gendered response' is then taken as an example to illustrate an alternative perspective on traditional gender and language/discourse research.
AbstractList Issues related to theoretical assumptions of critical discourse analysis (CDA) are considered with respect to the category of ideology. Because CDA refers to the relation of subjects to language & texts to sociocultural contexts, it accepts the premise that ideology is expressed through discursive forms. Reflected in this statement is the assumption that discourse reveals relations of domination that make it ideological. The working of ideology in discourse is demonstrated in a discussion of readings of the term gendered in the title of a dissertation by members of its review committee. It is suggested that if ideology is to mean anything in this situation, it must explain the relation between a given response & a gendered identity. However, it is perhaps better to treat the response not as a manifestation of individual consciousness, but as a program of conduct. This frees the analyst to consider the relation of subjectivity & consciousness from an other than psychological or sociological viewpoint. Thus, response on this view is taken to be a synthetic device that is adapted & deployed within a specific discursive situation rather than an effect of natural states of consciousness or sociological process. Employed in this manner, CDA does not so much reveal processes previously overlooked by research, as do something different with them. 22 References. D. Ryfe
