Abstract | Total captures, species richness, diversity, and assemblages of adult carabids (Coleoptera:Carabidae) in a boreal mixed-wood ecosystem study were compared among unharvested, and clear-cut plots untreated or treated with herbicides (Vision and Release), mechanical treatments (brush saw and Silvana Selective). Carabids were sampled using unbaited pitfall traps for one growing season 7 and 9 years after clear-cutting, in the second growing season after competition control was applied. A total of 5032 individuals representing 30 species were collected between June 1 and September 25, 1995. Total catches were not affected by the harvest or the conifer release alternatives applied. Species richness and diversity increased following conifer release alternatives. Ten species showed habitat preferences after treatment whereas the remaining 20 species were not significantly affected by treatment. |

Species richness and diversity increased following conifer release alternatives. Ten species showed habitat preferences after treatment whereas the remaining 20 species were not significantly affected by treatment. Carabid beetle assemblages are often used to characterize habitat disturbance because they show different degrees of habitat selectivity. In northwestern Ontario, Canada, a study was conducted to compare the effects of clearcutting and competing vegetation control methods on carabid assemblages within an aspen/spruce mixed-wood ecosystem. A randomized complete block design was employed. Major portions of the blocks had been clearcut in 1986 and 1988 and replanted with bareroot white spruce and black spruce. Control of competing vegetation was conducted in 1993. Results showed that, while total carabid catch was unaffected by treatment, species richness and diversity tended to be higher on clearcut than on unharvested plots. In addition, within the clearcut plots, diversity and richness tended to be higher on the plots subjected to vegetation control than on untreated plots. However, the number of forest specialists was reduced following clearcutting and conifer release, while the number of open-grounds specialists increased. Total captures, species richness, diversity, and assemblages of adult carabids (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in a boreal mixed-wood ecosystem study were compared among unharvested, and clear-cut plots untreated or treated with herbicides (Vision registered and Release registered ), mechanical treatments (brush saw and Silvana Selective).
