Discusses the principles and performance of the arc sensor. Concludes that a six-axis vertical multiple joints arc welding robot has been developed to meet the increasing high standards required of arc welding robots. Panasonic's Spin Arc high-speed rotating arc seam following system offers a number of advantages, including improvement in precision and response to misaligned or distorted joints and large increases in welding speed over conventional through-arc methods. The system is already in service in applications ranging from narrow gap welding of extremely thick plates to high-speed welding of thin sheets. In the high-speed rotation arc welding method the arc is rotated at a high speed by rotating the electrode nozzle with an offset applied to the tip of the wire. This method ensures penetration into the sidewalls in narrow gap welding. While with competitive oscillation the upper limit of oscillation frequency is 4Hz-5Hz, the Spin Arc enables high-speed rotation of the tip to 100Hz to be easily achieved. The high-speed rotation arc method has been applied extensively to multiple electrode welding devices and multiple joint arc welding robots since it was applied to the narrow gap welding of extremely thick sheets in 1982.
