Summary:Three different claybinders (Mfensi, Afari, and Fosu clays) were used to improve the plasticity of lithomargic clay. Lithomargic clay binder formulations were produced in a ratio of 4:1 by mixing, moulding, drying and firing at 1350°C for 2 hours. Properties including linear firing shrinkage, bulk density, apparent porosity, water absorption, and cold crushing strength were measured. The modulus of rupture of the fired bricks was measured before and after thermal cycling to evaluate their thermal shock resistance. The results show that the properties of the fired bricks depend strongly on the chemical composition of the clay binders. Mfensi clay exhibited good combination of properties with low water absorption, very good cold crushing strength and thermal shock resistance.
