Abstract This study assessed the efficiency of a model of a familiar urban area for enhancing knowledge of the spatial environment by adults with visual impairments. It found a significant improvement in knowledge of spatial configuration after exposure to the model, suggesting that models are powerful means of developing cognitive mapping in people who are visually impaired.
AbstractList This study assessed the efficiency of a model of a familiar urban area for enhancing knowledge of the spatial environment by adults with visual impairments. It found a significant improvement in knowledge of spatial configuration after exposure to the model, suggesting that models are powerful means of developing cognitive mapping in people who are visually impaired.
By comparison, the encoding of a set of spatial features in a sequence is easier for a person who is visually impaired, who can thereby remember a specific route or pathway. [...] instead of relying on complex knowledge of spatial configurations, people who are visually impaired usually favor route-based knowledge of their surroundings (Foulke, 1982).
This study assessed the efficiency of a model of a familiar urban area for enhancing knowledge of the spatial environment by adults with visual impairments.
