Abstract Furthermore, aid, as some critics such as Dambisa Moyo (2009: 56-65) have recently rather devastatingly demonstrated, also ultimately undermined economic development, perpetuated poverty and undercut civil society, while also provoking conflicts in Africa by making the seizure and retention of power indispensable to gaining unbridled access to aid largesse. [...] aid undermined social capital 'by thwarting accountability mechanisms, encouraging rent seeking behaviour, siphoning off scarce talent from the employment pool, and removing pressures to reform inefficient policies and institutions' (ibid.: 59).
AbstractList The authors summarize the factors that have retarded Africa's socio-economic development over the last century. The ruinous effects of bad governance, combined with the colonial legacy, have been manifested in the failed record of regional economic integration. Yet over recent years Africa has made notable progress in addressing its developmental challenges. Additionally, as markets in other regions of the world have become saturated, foreign investors have turned to Africa to make their new investments. The author recommends that in solidifying its future development, Africa must eschew the kind of one-size-fits-all economic policies --- embodied in the so-called 'Washington Consensus' --- that were foisted on African countries, with dubious and often seemingly nefarious consequences.
