| Abstract | A personal digital assistant (PDA) is an invaluable technological tool for keeping current clinical information handy, and can reduce point of care clinical errors. PDAs used to handle patient information are subject to the rules set forth in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act's Final Security Rule. The rule specifies the following areas in the data management system where users must ensure safety of information: person or entity authentication, access control, audit controls, encryption, integrity, and transmission security. Nurses should be aware of their duty to protect confidential information related to patient care, and tips for protecting the information in their PDAs are presented. |
