ARISTOTLE ON THE HOMERIC NARRATOR

The author discusses an alternative interpretation of a passage in Aristotle's Poetics, in which the philosopher praises the work of Homer. Aristotle approved of Homer's work because he showed events rather than told of them, which is a good form of mimesis.

Abstract The author discusses an alternative interpretation of a passage in Aristotle's Poetics, in which the philosopher praises the work of Homer. Aristotle approved of Homer's work because he showed events rather than told of them, which is a good form of mimesis.
AbstractList Returning to the "Poetics" 1460a 5-11, suggests that Aristotle is referring to the well-known covertness of the Homeric narrator who, apart from the proem and Muse-invocations, is invisible as a person and only rarely comments openly on his story or characters. What we can credit Aristotle with is the anticipation of the modern narratological distinction of "telling" (a narrator is visible and sums up for the readers what is happening) versus "showing" (the story seems to tell itself without the intervention of a narrator): Homer shows, while the other epic poets tell. Showing is the most perfect and effective form of mimesis, while telling is less effective, because it involves the use of unmimetic narratorial interventions. (Quotes from original text)
