Summary: | The optical properties of 4-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) liquid-crystalline free-standing films (FSFs) were studied. The theoretical characteristics of the smectic A (SmA) phase FSF were determined using the analytical method. The incidence angle dependence of the phase difference for 100 8CB-FSFs was measured by transmission ellipsometry using a photoelastic modulator (PEM). The number of layers could clearly be separated from 2 to 9 layers. As a result of the least-squares fitting in all the films, the same anisotropies of the refractive indices
