The influence of the temperature and Ga-In alloy composition on the separation of uranium from neodymium in molten Ga-In/3LiCl-2KCl system during the recycling of high-level waste

The experimental values of the equilibrium potentials ENd(Ga−In) and EU(Ga−In)vs. Cl−/Cl2 reference electrode in fused 3LiCl-2KCl eutectic at the temperature range (from 723 to 823) K by potentiometric method at zero current were measured. The apparent standard potentials of Nd(Ga-In) and U(Ga-In) a...

Summary:The experimental values of the equilibrium potentials ENd(Ga−In) and EU(Ga−In)vs. Cl−/Cl2 reference electrode in fused 3LiCl-2KCl eutectic at the temperature range (from 723 to 823) K by potentiometric method at zero current were measured. The apparent standard potentials of Nd(Ga-In) and U(Ga-In) alloys in fused Me(Ga-In)/3LiCl-2KCl system were calculated. Neodymium and uranium activity coefficients and Nd/U separation factor in gallium-indium alloys containing 40 and 70 wt % indium was determined. The efficiency of separation of Nd from U was estimated. [Display omitted] •The experimental values of the equilibrium potentials Nd(Ga-In) and U(Ga-In) alloys at the temperature range 723–823 K were measured.•The apparent standard potentials of Nd(Ga-In) and U(Ga-In) alloys were calculated.•Activity coefficients of Nd and U in Ga-In alloys of different composition were determined.•The effect of indium concentration in Ga-In alloys on separation factor of Nd/U couple was observed in liquid metal/molten salt systems.
