The contents of these background papers are summarized in this report, and conclusions presented. |

| AbstractList | Papers presented at the October 2001 conference on Responsible Fisheries in the Marine Ecosystem, held in Reykjavik, Iceland, are summarized. A major objective of the conference was to help fisheries managers move from current management frameworks to ecosystem-based management. Papers discussed the current state of fisheries and their management, marine ecosystem dynamics, and ways to incorporate ecosystem considerations in managing human activities in the marine environment. The major conclusions of these papers are listed and summarized, including overfishing impacts and incentives for rationalization under <">rights-based" fishing.
