Abstract The exoelectron emission phenomena from metals in peripheral-cutting and dry-friction processes were examined using a modified GM counter with a lathe-like device. Aluminum (Al), brass (Bs) and carbon steel (S45C) specimens were cut with a cemented carbide tool. The emission intensity (El) during the cutting process fluctuated considerably with the cutting time. The EE for the same cutting speed decreased in the order Al≫Bs≫S45C. In the friction process, a rotating metal bar (Bs and S45C) was pressed with a rectangular metal tool (Al, Bs and S45C) at various loads. The El varied very irregularly with the friction time and was almost the same magnitude for all the metal bar-metal tool couples, except for a S45C–Bs couple. The El increased along with an increase in the cutting and friction speeds, depth of a cut and the applied friction load.
