Summary:Conclusion and summary In order to evaluate some of the factors responsible for the post-perfusion lung complications, 98 dogs were divided into 14 groups; each group was perfused in a different manner. The various causes which could be implicated in the development of these lesions have been discussed. It has become apparent that more than one factor plays a role in the production of this syndrome. The most important ones, however, seem to be the loss of surfactant, a non-physiologic pressure in the pulmonary vessels, sludging of the blood with slowing of the microcirculation, an impediment to the pulmonary venous return with elevation of the pulmonary capillary pressure, and denaturation of proteins. More work is certainly needed in order to determine the importance of each factor and to devise means of prevention.
