Antiquity of American Polyploid Cotton
Fragments of a boll of Gossypium hirsutum L. from archeological excavations near Tehuacán, Mexico, prove that this species existed in 5800 B.C. No doubt remains that American tetraploid cotton species originated through natural hybridization.
