Summary:It is demonstrated that a uniform coated layer of alumina can be deposited on Ce-stabilised zirconia, providing relatively dilute coating solutions are used to prevent the simultaneous precipitation of separate particles of coating material. Homogeneous nucleation followed by deposition of colloidal precipitate particles is the most probable layer growth mechanism in this case. The preparation method described can be applied to many other systems. 8 refs.
