Abstract A simple model for the flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids in an open channel for the laminar regime has been developed. The validity of the model has been tested using oils, coal—water slurry and carboxymethylcellulose solution. This model has been used to determine the flow parameters of fluidized sand. For fluidization purposes, a new design of distributor, termed a “Pneudistributor”, has been used. This new design of distributor extends the upper limit of the temperature for transport in a fluidized state up to 850 °C and is not subject to the usual disadvantages resulting from backfilling by particles. The results indicate that fluidized sand behaves as a non-Newtonian fluid. Comparison of the flow parameters with the values reported in the literature and some experimental evidence show that the flow parameters are dependent on the design of the distributor. A procedure for the design of a channel for transporting any fluid in the laminar regime has been outlined.
