Rebuilding an agenda for Brazilian science and technology

In Brazil, federal and state public universities produce 98% of the scientific research. [...]the Brazilian deans for research, postgraduation, and innovation from federal universities identified six strategic areas for research to be considered when prioritising the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation's actions. In the Innovation, Economy, and Business theme, we included the topics of creative economy; circular economy; carbon market; innovation ecosystems; technology transfer; intellectual protection; digital social innovation; environmental, social, and governance factors; public–private partnerships; and the legal framework for science and technology. Besides organising a strategic plan for science and technology in Brazil around the themes above, we reinforce the importance of developing strong connections with stakeholders from the southern hemisphere and from Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Since the Brazilian redemocratisation in the mid-1980s, after two decades of military dictatorship, this is the first time a newly elected president has established a close dialogue with the academic scientific community before his inauguration.
