Abstract In laboratory incubation studies with 32 farm soils, the initial half-life of freshly-applied phorate ranged from less than 1 to more than 16 weeks. Accelerated degradation was stimulated by a single application of the recommended dose and occurred most readily at pH levels 7.4. It is recommended that the degradative properties of soils are established before insecticide treatments are selected.
AbstractList The extent to which carrot fly control in the U.K. is being jeopardized by accelerated degradation of phorate residues in soil was studied. Incubation of 32 carrot farm soils in the laboratory showed that the half-life of phorate ranged from less than 1 to more than 16 weeks. Accelerated degradation occurred most readily at soil pH levels above 7.4 and least readily in low pH soils with high organic matter content. The potential role of soil characteristics and treatment histories in accelerating phorate degradation also was considered. The implications of these findings for determining proper insecticide application rates are discussed.
In laboratory incubation studies with 32 farm soils, the initial half-life of freshly-applied phorate ranged from less than 1 to more than 16 weeks. Accelerated degradation was stimulated by a single application of the recommended dose and occurred most readily at pH levels 7.4. It is recommended that the degradative properties of soils are established before insecticide treatments are selected.
