Optimum design of statically indeterminate structures subject to strength and stiffness constraints and multiple loading

Minimum-weight designs of statically indeterminate beams under multiple load systems are presented. Under each load system, which consists of external loads and self-weight, the normal and shear stresses and the maximum deflection in the beams are restricted from above. The variation of the stiffnes...

Summary:Minimum-weight designs of statically indeterminate beams under multiple load systems are presented. Under each load system, which consists of external loads and self-weight, the normal and shear stresses and the maximum deflection in the beams are restricted from above. The variation of the stiffness along the span of the beam is restricted to splines of order zero, one or two. The solutions of the resulting non-linear programming problems are attempted by several methods. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the range of applicability of the various methods.
