Summary:In this paper, we investigate a coupled Hirota–Maxwell–Bloch system, which describes the propagation of the optical pulse in an erbium-doped fiber. Degenerate soliton and breather solutions of the system are obtained by the generalized Darboux transformation. On the basis of these solutions, we observe the degenerate bright and dark solitons (breathers) and study the collision dynamics between them. By modifying the generalized Darboux transform, a new method for solving the mixed solutions is found, and the collisions between breathers and rogue waves are obtained. The collision between them is elastic collision, which is a good characteristic in optical fiber propagation.
