On the formation and behaviour of point defect clusters in neutron irradiated uranium carbide
Hyperstoichiometric uranium carbide single crystal specimens have been irradiated to doses of up to 5.4 × 10 16 f/cm 3 at ∼ 130° C. A transmission electron microscope examination of thin films has shown that a dose of 1.4 × 10 16 f/cm 3 results in the formation of observable clusters in the uranium...

3 results in the formation of observable clusters in the uranium carbide matrix, the size and number of which increase with dose. Observable point defect clusters are only formed in the uranium dicarbide platelets after the highest dose studied. On annealing, the point defect clusters in both phases start to disappear above 700° C. On annealing at 1200° C and 1300° C however, the clusters in the uranium carbide matrix grow and become resolvable as loops.
The results are explained on the hypothesis that the point defect clusters in the irradiated material are interstitial in nature. It is suggested that the vacancies become mobile at 700° C and produce the observed annealing effects by recombining with the interstitial clusters. A model is proposed for the formation of interstitial loops which is consistent with the observed loop behaviour.
