Abstract A portable device for biochemical detection is presented in this paper. Combined with corresponding biosensors, multiple biochemical parameters can be measured such as hemoglobin (Hb) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and so on. This device is designed based on the principle of optic reflection. In this device, a light emission diode (LED) is selected as the light source and it can be changed in order to measure multiple biochemical parameters. A new optic fibre sensor in the shape of “YY” type is adopted in order to detect the signal and monitor the status of the system at the same time. It is experimentally found that the new optic fibre sensor can improve the stability and the accuracy of the system. In this paper, detecting concentration of hemoglobin (Hb) in whole blood by the device is demonstrated. Compared with the result obtained by large biochemical analytic instruments, the correlation coefficient (r) is 0.981 and the testing time is about 60 s. The reproducibility of the system was also tested. In summary, this device has virtue of portability, high accuracy, fast response and dry processing, so it has potential to be used in many fields such as bloodmobile and function test for athletes in situ.
