On page 119, Haridy et al." present data revealing that the oldest known odontode-like structures, which have beena subject of debate about whether they belong to vertebrates, are instead more comparable to sensitive regions on the surface of arthropods (a group of invertebrates that contains crustaceans such as crabs). Haridy and colleagues present 3D anatomical comparisons between Anatolepis tubule networks and those of extinct and living arthropods and vertebrates. [...]this evidence points to the probable sensory function of these kinds of structure found on the surface of skeletons from the Middle Cambrian to Ordovician periods (around 500 million to 444 million years ago). |
