Abstract To study wrinkle formation in wool, we investigate the relationship between wrinkle recovery and moisture regain in wool fabrics and the influence of incorporating bulky molecules (ninhydrin) on wrinkle recovery. We prepare wool fabrics by introducing additional disulfide (-SS-) groups using 2-iminothiolane hydrochloride (2-IT), and inves tigate the influence of the disulfide (-SS-) content on wrinkle recovery. FT-Raman spectroscopy reveals that wrinkle recovery improves with increasing -SS- content in wool fabrics. From these experiments, we demonstrate that wrinkle formation in wool occurs with the disconnection and reconnection (rearrangement) of hydrogen bonds, and -SS groups exert a repelling force on hydrogen bonds at the time of wrinkle formation.
