(Author/CR) In this article, we highlight key features of Multisystemic Therapy (MST) and of the supervisory, consultation, and program practices that support therapist implementation of MST in community-based settings.The article begins with a summary of the theoretical and empirical foundations of MST and of evidence supporting the effectiveness of the model. The remaining sections of the manuscript focus on therapist implementation of the model, supervisory practices, the use of consultation, and program (e.g., organizational, interorganizational) practices. Article in Part I of a special series on school safety. Describes the theoretical and empirical foundations of multisystemic therapy (MST) which views behaviour as a product of multiple, interconnecting influences from the individual, peers, family, school and community. Outcome studies suggest it may be both more effective and cost effective than alternative methods of treating anti-social young people. Summarises the principles of MST, using a case study to illustrate how it is used by the therapist, and looks at how adherence to MST principles by therapists is assured through supervision and consultation. Finally, discusses programme issues including inter-agency collaboration, funding and organisational context. |
