Abstract The scale of turbulence generated using conventional techniques is usually limited by the size of the wind tunnel. In many cases the prototype turbulence length scale can not be correctly modeled. A new technique, active turbulence modeling, which overcomes this limitation is introduced and illustrated. It is shown how turbulence can be controlled by active supplying of additional energy to the flow. The turbulence intensity and scale, spectra, and space cross-correlations are presented and discussed. The scale of turbulence, generated in an active manner, is one order of magnitude larger than the maximum scale obtainable in the same wind tunnel using a passive technique of turbulence modeling. The presented technique could be used in studies of the turbulence scale effects on the aerodynamics of buildings and structures.
